The Silver Exit: Australia's wellness founder-succession wave

More than half a million Australian businesses are owned by principals aged sixty or over. A large share of them will change hands this decade.

Australia is entering a succession wave. More than 500,000 businesses are owned by principals aged 60 or over, and surveys put the share planning to exit within five years near half. A meaningful slice sits in health, wellness and consumer health.

Most of these founders have never sold a business, and most have no natural family successor. That combination — high-quality assets, first-time sellers, thin succession planning — is exactly where specialist advisory earns its keep.

The wave is coming whether founders plan for it or not. Planning is the difference between a sale and a good one.

The risk is a buyer's market by default: too many undifferentiated processes hitting the market at once. The businesses that clear well will be prepared early, positioned sharply, and taken to the right buyers rather than all of them.
